Family homes have halved in size over the last 90 years

The average size of a family home has almost halved over the last ninety years according to a recent report. This has resulted in families increasingly being forced into smaller spaces and many new homes not having a garden or sufficient storage space.

The report (from the Post Office) compared newly-built, semi-detached houses in 1924 with the average home being built today. It found that many of the 1924-built homes had four bedrooms and an average size of 1647sq ft, while today’s typical home is almost half that size with just three bedrooms and only 925sq ft. The difference of 722sq ft is roughly the equivalent of two double bedrooms!
